How The Throttle Position Sensor Works

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is attached to the throttle body and rotates with the throttle shaft. Its job is to tell the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) exactly how far the throttle plate has opened as you press or release the accelerator pedal.

Inside the TPS is a simple potentiometer that operates using three electrical circuits:

• 5-Volt Reference: A regulated 5-Volt reference signal supplied by the PCM.
• Ground: A dedicated Ground circuit provided by the PCM.
• Signal: A variable voltage signal sent back to the PCM that reflects throttle plate position.

With the ignition switch in the ON position and the throttle closed, the TPS signal will typically measure between 0.2 and 0.9 Volts DC. As the throttle plate opens, that voltage should increase smoothly until it reaches nearly 5 Volts DC at wide-open throttle (WOT).

The PCM constantly monitors this changing voltage to determine driver demand. It uses that information to calculate fuel delivery, ignition timing, and other engine control functions.

If the TPS signal becomes erratic, remains fixed at one voltage, or disappears altogether, the PCM can no longer accurately determine throttle position. This can result in hesitation, unstable idle, poor throttle response, and the PCM registering a TPS-related diagnostic trouble code.

The cool thing about the TPS is that it's very easy to diagnose. A few simple multimeter tests are all it takes to verify the TPS signal and confirm that the sensor is receiving both its 5-Volt reference signal and Ground.
